Herbal Recipes from the Garden

Bringing the garden inside the home is a wonderful way of staying connected to your garden. What better way than to indulge in a home spa treatment. Or if you've worked hard all-day and just want to soak in the tub to soothe your soar muscles, these bath bags will surely relax you. These exciting and fun recipes are based on a book called The Herbal Body Book by Stephanie Tourles. Play around with the ingredients, dry your own, use what you have or follow the ingredient list to see what you like best. An inexpensive way to pamper yourself with facial/body products is to make your own. I've included a good selection of many organic and natural masks, scrubs and cleansers. Have a girlfriend come over and play with these recipes. Some are messy and some are tasty. Enjoy!

Bath Bags

Soar Muscle Soak -- Helps to relax tense or sore muscles. The fragrance will soothe frayed nerves.

1/2 cup Epsom salts (or sea salts) 2 tsp. Lemon Balm
1/2 cup Baking soda 2 tsp. Peppermint leaves
1T Sage 10 drops of essential oil of:
1T Marjoram eucalyptus, peppermint or juniper
1T Pine Needles (dried)

Mix all together and place on a piece of cheesecloth cut to fit size. Tie with rubber band and place in bathtub. Good for 1 treatment.

Herbal Bath Bag -- Great for relaxing after a long day at work.

2 T Elder Flowers 1 T Raspberry Leaves
2 T Chamomile flowers 1 T Comfy Leaves
2 T Lemon Balm leaves 1 T ground oatmeal
2 T Jasmine Flowers

Mix all dried ingredients in a bowl. Fill an unbleached muslin bag and hang over running water when filling bathtub. Place in tub after its been filled and just let it soak.

This recipe comes from Barbara Milo Ohrbach- The Scented Room.

1 oz. Rose petals 1/2 oz. Cut lemon peel
1 oz. Lavender flowers 2 bay leaves, broken
1 oz. Rolled oats (for bulk) 2 rosemary sprigs, crushed
1/2 oz. Cut orange peel

Mix in a bowl and fill 4 unbleached muslin bags. Each one is good for several baths. Place in bathroom and use as a nice fragrance to add to the bathroom.

Facial/ Body scrubs

This is an all-purpose facial/body scrub that will leave your skin feeling smooth and silky.

1/2 cup ground oatmeal 1/2 tsp. Rosemary leaves
1/3 cup ground sunflower seeds dash of cinnamon powder
4 T Almond meal water, milk, or heavy cream
1/2 tsp. ground peppermint leaves
1/2 tsp. Spearmint leaves

The dry mix can be stored in a jar or zip lock baggie. You will use 2 tsp. of the mixture for the face; more is needed for the body. Use heavy cream for dry skin, milk for normal skin and water for oily skin. Add enough liquid to make a paste. Allow to thicken for 1 minute and apply to face or body. Massage and rinse.

Experiment with this facial exfoliant and see what you think.

2 T powdered milk
1/2 cup ground oatmeal
1 tsp. cornmeal
water

The dry mix can be stored in a jar or zip lock baggie. Mix enough water to thicken for 1 minute. Massage onto face and rinse.

PH Restorer -- Here's a homemade toner to apply after the cleansers.

2 cups distilled water
1/4 cup Raw Apple Cider Vinegar
10 drops of lavender, lemon or Rose oil

This makes 32 treatments. Store in spray bottle.

Home-made Masks can be messy but a lot of fun. Experiment with these and see which ones you like best.

1/4 cup mashed papaya
1 tsp. pineapple juice

Apply on face for 10 minutes or so and rinse. This is not good for sensitive or sunburned skin.

1 T Honey
1 tsp. wheat germ
1 tsp. sunflower seed meal

Combine ingredients and let sit for 1 min. Leave on face for 30 minutes. Rinse.

This peaches and cream mask smells so good you don't know whether to wear it or eat it.

1/2 very ripe peach
1 T heavy cream

Place in blender. It may be runny so have a towel available. Apply to face and neck and leave for 30 minutes. Rinse and dry.

This is a creamy scrub cleanser and mask.

2 T heavy cream
1 T peach puree
1 T ground oatmeal
1/2 tsp. Chamomile Flowers

Mix ingredients and apply to face. Let sit for 5 minutes. If it used as a mask let sit for 15-20 minutes.

Deep pore cleanser

1 tsp. almond meal 1/4 medium size tomato or
1 tsp. sunflower seed meal 1 inch chunk cucumber peeled
1 tsp. ground oatmeal water
1/4 tsp. quality vegetable oil

In a blender add cucumber or tomato. Add 1 T or less of water. Blend until smooth and strain. Combine enough vegetable liquid to meal and oil to form a paste. Spread on the face and neck, allow to dry. Rinse.

This is a good body scrub.

1/4 cup sea salt
1/4 cup warmed coconut oil or olive oil
5 drops lemon oil (optional)

Massage into skin, (do not rub) until rosy glow appears. Rinse with warm water and towel dry.
