What
is Reiki?
Reiki is the Japanese word for Universal Life Force
Energy and is made up of two Japanese characters Rei
and Ki. Rei means both universal, in the sense of
everywhere and also spiritual wisdom, and Ki means
the same as prana or chi, i.e. the vital life force
within all living things.
It creates and sustains all existence and can be used to
transform or re-create. All healers use chi, but not all
healers use Reiki. Reiki is specific kind of life force
that can only be channeled by someone who has been attuned
to it.
Reiki is approximately 2,500 years old and its symbols
originate from the Sanskrit and Tibetan languages.
Dr. Mikao Usui was the creator of the Usui Reiki System.
Usui was a Japanese man, hence the name Reiki. He
wanted to understand and discover how the ancient
sages, mystics and religious teachers were able to
heal. With that in mind, he went on a quest to find
his answers.

How does it work?
Reiki particularly works on both the physical
body and the emotional body. I will work on a person's
organs (liver, spleen, lungs, heart, etc.), the endocrine
system (pituitary gland, thyroid gland, etc.) and
the chakras. There are seven
chakra points. Each of these chakras have a specific
color and purpose where they are placed. They spin
in a clockwise direction and serve as channels in
the body keeping our life force functioning fully.
They also correlate with the 5-elements
in Chinese Medicine. When any of these, being the
endocrine system, chakra centers or organs are out
of balance, physical and emotional confusion may occur.
As a reiki practitioner, I have the sensitivity that enables
me to intuitively work with the energies of the body (emotional
and physical). By placing my hands on an area of the body
or (outside in it's energy field) that represent any of
these elements, I allow the person to draw the necessary
amount of Chi (universal life force energy) through me and
receive the healing that they require for balancing them
out. Although it may be perceived as such, reiki is not
sent out by the practitioner; rather, the recipient draws
the energy through the practitioner's hands.
What is special about Reiki is its simplicity; it is very
profound. The depth of healing brings a state of wholeness
and balance to the body, mind and spirit, which results
in the experience of perfect health. When the union of body
and mind has an opportunity to rest in its natural state,
healing begins. So what Reiki does is it provides this opportunity.
By letting the mind still and quiet down, the body has an
opportunity to heal, because the body and mind are inseparable.
In this space miracles can happen. Pain is released, fears
are diminished, the heart has an opportunity to open and
express its natural state.
The profound wisdom that we carry within is the foundation
of Reiki that dissolves the confusion and doubts arising
from the ego. Layer by layer, like an onion skin peeling
away, thus will the true self be revealed. In this way,
the secrets of our own truth and inner beauty are unleashed
and will emanate unceasingly. This insight is the beginning
of opening our hearts and raising our consciousness. Only
then, can we develop the strength required to maintain freedom
and inner peace.
